Infertility in men?
Infertility in men may be caused by low sperm count, low motility and morphology of sperms, use of alcohol, smoking, steroid or drug intake, age, erectile dysfunction, medicines etc.
Infertility in women?
The ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus must be functional in women to conceive.
- Ovaries
- Ovulation. Regular predictable periods will reflect ovulation cycle. Woman’s menstrual cycle is 28 days long on average. Day 1 is counted as the first day of mensuration.
- A woman may not ovulate despite regular periods due to:
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): It is a hormone imbalance problem which interferes with normal process of ovulation.
- FHA: Functional hypothalamic Amenorrhea (absent periods) relates to excessive physical or emotional stress.
- Diminished Ovarian Reserve (DOR): Ability of the ovary to produce eggs is reduced because of congenital, medical, surgical, or unexplained reasons and age.
- Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI): When the ovaries fail before 40 years of age similar to premature menopause.
- Menopause: With the changes in hormones, the decline in ovarian function around age of 45-50 causes cessation of mensuration and is often associated with hot-flashes and irregular periods.
- Fallopian Tubes:
- Reasons for blocked fallopian tubes (tubal occlusion) include a pelvic infection, ruptured appendicitis, gonorrhea or chlamydia, endometriosis ;
- Irregular periods or no menstrual periods.
- Very painful periods.
- Frequent miscarriage.
- Uterus:
- Bleeding between periods or after sex;
- Hormones change;
- Thyroid problems;
